The forum was such a great experience. It taught all of us so much and gave us an idea of what it is like to try to solve a real world problem. We were of course presenting Rotted. Our app to reduce gas car pollution. From the feedback we got from the people who came by, everyone really enjoyed. Some adults even asked if they could purchase the app. We were all thrilled because of this news. We explained deeply to everyone how the apps works and how much it would benefit the air.
Our table was filled 90 percent of the time. It was great to inform so many people about it, but was also a big challenge. Quite often we would start explaining to someone, but halfway through another person would come. It was difficult because you had to introduce the whole idea to someone who just walked by but also stay on track with the person you were talking to earlier. Our preparation was great. Ben and I both learned how to use the app and learned a little bit about the coding. So Dylan didn’t have to explain it every time. We did prepare great, but if we did it again we would tell about our app but much quicker. Fortunately every person that came to our booth was willing to talk for a while. If we presented again we would have quick notes about the app to get to the main points. And if anyone asked about the app further we would for sure answer them. We have now made extreme progress. We finished our app and added some new features. Overall the app can plot three places and find the fastest way, it can also recognize common places like cafes and suggest the closest one too you. We have a list of people's driving schedules and we have taken them and put that in our app. According to our data one person saved 8.7 pounds of carbon dioxide from the environment and one dollar and twenty three cents.
Our groups solution saves your time and your gas. You can help the environment while getting to your destination in the fastest way possible. Our app takes your calendar and adds it into your whole day and then it tells you when you should leave and get where you want to get using the least amount of gas possible. We started off with the idea of saving gas. Then once we realized that we can get people to save gas but probably cant get them to stop using gas we decided to get them to use the least amount of gas possible. This is because people use gas for unintelligent reasons and if they download our app they can get to where they want to go while saving lots of gas and time. There has been difficulty with our groups cooperation but all in all we end up working well together. The only difficulty’s we had was with the amount of work that was to be done due to the incredibly hard coding that was done. In the end we will try to market our solution and our product and maybe even try to certify it in the App Store.
My group is working on the app right now. We are working on the functions of what the app will do. So right now we have a map and three input boxes. What we’ve been working is is that when you put in the locations it will help you figure out what time you should leave. We have as of now the base of the app and have not gotten the details in yet. A couple days ago we built alerts in case you want to change course. This is just the start of our app programming and there are many more little things to be done. We are also making phone calls to people and asking if they would use our app. Most of them said they would try it out and some said they would even use it on a daily basis. This is a great start to our project and we will be moving on to marketing the app once we are finished. written by Ben Leshgold
The day with faculty was incredibly helpful. They gave us a different perspective. A perspective from those who really drive and who would benefit from the app. We learned that we need to add details that make driving more enjoyable. They gave us the idea of adding close coffee shops and restaurants that they like. The app would notify them if they are close by. They also gave us the idea of adding credits to the app and let them know how much pollution they saved by using app. After getting great feedback from the faculty our group talked together and we are mainly focusing on the small details that overall make a big difference. We have reached out with multiple organizations such as “The Two Swedish Brothers”. They informed us that electric cars are a huge part of increasing the healthy air. They don’t bring nearly any pollution to the air. By using our app you will save huge amounts of gas without buying a new car. When getting out of airport for instance you won’t smell cars and gas as soon as you get home. You smell fresh air. You will be able to travel efficiently while feeling good that you helped the environment. This app needs to be on your phone because if the environment fails air will be so bad and unhealthy. Our app will have a huge impact on the environment simply making everything healthier and easier to live a healthy life. To collect our data and find out how much pollution is saved we are going to calculate the average amount of gas that a car uses per mile. And a day later with the same activities before, we are going to calculate how many miles you save with the app.
This week our team made great progress. We narrowed our idea. And came up with a few possible solutions. Our ideas : how many times does your family or you yourself drive somewhere then back to home then somewhere then back to home again. This is a huge waste of gas. But we have the solution. An app, this app can take your schedule and plot you a path. In the most efficient way it can plot the best path. But what we got from all these ideas is not a solution. We got an awesome problem, unessential waste of gas. And that problem is where we are going right now.
Our team consists of 3 people Ben Leshgold, Dylan Eskovitz, and Caroline O’Connor. We are students at Windward school and we are in Kevin Kloeker’s Science 7 class. We are working on a CBL, Challenged based learning, project which focuses on fixing a problem in the world. Our ideas for problems that we are facing our things having to do with pollution created from transportation and fossil fuels. These are all bad for the environment and we are trying to narrow it down. These problems are very big so we can’t fix them in the time that we have. We want to narrow it down enough so that we can help people's lives everyday. Our main goal for this project is to think of an idea, execute it, build it, and make it useful. written by Ben Leshgold, Title by Caroline O’Connor |
